  •   How to do a Decade

If there is one trick that people expect you to know when you ride flatland it is the decade.  This trick is very similar to the boomerang except for one small detail- you are only on the back tire!

    • Begin by rolling at a very slow speed with both feet on the back pegs.
    • Grab both brakes and do a small endo and at the same time bring your right foot up and put it sideways on the top tube junction with the seat post tube.   Your heel should point to the left.
    • The bike will fall backwards and go up onto its back wheel- as this happens lift your left foot from the peg and throw it over the top of the bike (the head tube) and jump with your right foot.
    • As soon as you have jumped spot your landing.  You want your left foot to land in the same spot that your right foot jumped off of.  This will take a while to learn!
    • Once you have landed your left foot on the junction pull your right foot in right beside your left foot, let the front wheel fall forwards to the ground, step to the pedals and ride away.

Q:  I can jump over the bike but I ALWAYS land beside it!  How do I get to the frame?

A:  Don't jump OVER the bike- Jump straight up and PULL the bike underneath you.   Since you are so much heavier than your bike (let's hope) when you jump OVER the bike it doesn't have the weight to pull you back.  If on the other hand you jump almost straight up and PULL the bike underneath of you then you will be positioned perfectly to land right on the frame.

How important are decades?  Buy a video and see how many people are doing them!   They not only link into tricks but show up in the end and in the middle of tricks.   You can do double decades, triples, quintuples (if your Chase G.).  You can do them to the pegs, or to the pedals.  You can do them without brakes (rollade) or from the pegs (peverted boomerang).  It is one of the biggest keystone tricks that you will ever learn.
